The human body is made up of 65% water (so far, we’re not telling you anything…). The causes of water retention

The causes of water retention are numerous. It can depend on your lifestyle, your diet, your environment or even your body itself.

We all look forward to summer but yet some people don’t know that the heat can promote water retention.

Salt is your enemy: a diet too rich in salt can be the cause of water retention. Too little protein intake can also promote fluid retention.

Inactivity should be banned: prolonged immobility can lead to water retention. So only one watchword: move!

A hormonal imbalance can also be the cause, especially during pregnancy or menopause. The contraceptive pill can also be at the origin of this disorder. Finally, drug treatments sometimes lead to water retention, this is the case of corticosteroids and neuroleptics.

Symptoms of water retention

You feel bloated, puffy, bloated, it could be that! Water retention also affects other parts of the body such as the stomach, intestines or liver and then results in bloating.

Water retention often results in swelling and the most affected areas are then the legs, ankles and feet.

Stiffness of the targeted areas, numbness of the lower limbs, the “heavy legs” effect and skin discoloration can be observed.

Also watch your weight, water retention can lead to rapid and unexplained weight gain. (If you took 2kilos after the holidays, there’s nothing to worry about).

How to get rid of it?

A healthy diet

Above all, we avoid salt and sugar and drink as much as possible! It is also recommended to drink at least 1.5 L of water per day.

Certain foods with draining powers are also effective in the fight against water retention: say yes to celery, grapefruit, cabbage, artichoke, pineapple and green tea.

We also prefer “good fat”: vegetable oils, oilseeds, fatty fish. Bye bye cold cuts, cheese and many others… We also slow down the rhythm with pasta and rice. I promise it’s for your own good!

Let’s not forget our friends the proteins that nourish the muscle fibers and help us fight against water retention.

Daily physical activity

Any activity is good to take. Walking, cycling, swimming, of your choice … It is recommended to perform a moderate intensity physical activity lasting 30 minutes a day.

Do not forget that a daily activity is above all small gestures on a daily basis: For example, we drop the car and opt for cycling (or walking, it works just as well!)

Food supplements

You can also use natural drainers such as red vine, witch hazel or fragon, in addition to a good diet.

Magnesium facilitates the elimination of excess water in the body. It is also recommended to consume enough of it. Rich in magnesium, spirulina guarantees you an excellent intake. It also acts against hormonal imbalance, one of the main causes of this famous water retention.

There are also diuretics that improve kidney function and promote elimination. Cherry tail and parsley are natural diuretics that are widely used.

Final tip: Patience is the key. There is no miracle solution. Water retention will go away, but it takes time!
