We all dream of having a beautiful and healthy head of hair. Who has never looked at Rapunzel with a hint of jealousy: “Even while hanging out on the floor, her hair remains more beautiful than mine”. What an injustice!
It is true that we spend a lot of time and money on our hair. Always on the lookout for the best products, we sometimes fall for overpriced industrial products with a dubious composition to say the least.
So why not go natural? In this article, we will prove to you that “natural” does not rhyme with “ineffective”. Let’s meet Caroline the spirulina, a great ally to sublimate your hair.
Why spirulina?
Benefits of spirulina for our hair
We can no longer count the benefits of spirulina. In addition to its multiple actions on the body, it provides the hair with everything it needs.
It strengthens and protects your hair, brings volume, shine and thickness. In addition to strengthening them, it makes it possible to redefine and bring out the curls (in case of wavy and curly hair).
Its components :
If you are still new to spirulina, know that this superfood has anti-aging properties and is able to strengthen your immune system.
This blue micro-algae is endowed with an impressive amount of nutrients: amino acids (cysteine), minerals, pigmentations, rhamnose sugars (complex sugars from natural plants), trace elements (magnesium, iron, zinc, sodium), enzymes and fatty acids. It also has many vitamins such as vitamins B12, B3, B6, B9, E and A and contains between 50% and 70% protein.
The components that our hair needs :
Before starting any hair treatment or before choosing your treatments and shampoos, it is important to know well how our hair works, what their needs are but also what our hair type is. Not all commercially available treatments are suitable for all hair types.
However, here are the essential components to guarantee the health of our hair. In the first place, we have proteins, which promote the synthesis of keratin. Keratin, which represents 95% of the hair’s composition, has the role of protecting the hair from many external factors (such as UV, seawater, etc.).
The proteins present in spirulina will have many effects on your hair: restoration of keratin, strengthening of hair, acceleration of growth, repair of damaged and brittle hair as well as a contribution in suppleness and shine.
Keratin is composed of 18 amino acids including cysteine, which is found in spirulina. Cysteine offers the hair more resistance, flexibility and elasticity. It is ideal for people with thin or fragile hair.
Beta-carotene, also called provitamin A, turns into vitamin A once in the body. This vitamin will take care of protecting your hair.
Finally, fatty acids are also essential elements for maintaining the good health of our hair. Indeed, they need fatty substances to grow and stay nourished.
Nutrition and hydration: what’s the difference?
It is common to confuse nutrition and hydration. However, these are two completely different things.
A hair that needs hydration is dry and therefore needs water. It is therefore important to drink plenty of water. It is also possible to use moisturizing agents (honey, coconut milk, yogurt …) as a hair mask.
In general, a hair that needs to be nourished is dry but also split, fragile and therefore brittle. These hair have often had disastrous experiences (such as discoloration, repeated use of the straightening iron, etc.). To feed them, it is good to use vegetable oils (castor, avocado, jojoba oil, etc.) or ingredients such as egg, avocado or honey.
Whether you are making masks to moisturize or nourish your hair, it is possible to mix your ingredients with powdered spirulina. This can only be beneficial!
How to use it for our hair?
As a mask, shampoo or conditioner :
It is possible to use spirulina in powder form to complete (or create) a mask, a conditioner or a shampoo. Two possibilities are available to you :
- You are used to doing your home care. It is therefore possible to add spirulina powder to your recipe.
- You buy your shampoos and treatments in the trade. You can add powdered spirulina to it. Preferably choose neutral and organic treatments.
Have you never made a homemade mask or are you out of inspiration? No worries! We offer you two recipes for masks to make at home (we promise, there is nothing simpler) :
Moisturizing mask
- 1 yogurt
- 2 tablespoons of agave syrup
- 1 tablespoon of spirulina
Mix all the ingredients and apply the mask on the hair. Leave the mask on for a maximum of 2 hours and once the time has elapsed, rinse your hair and clean it with your usual shampoo.
If you do not know the amount of product you need, do not hesitate to divide the doses and add more if necessary.
Nourishing mask
- 1 tablespoon of spirulina powder
- 1 tablespoon of castor oil
- 1 half avocado
- 5 drops of Ylang Ylang oil
- 4 tablespoons of coconut cream
Mix the ingredients and apply to the lengths. Put a towel tied around your head (or use cellophane paper) and leave for 2 hours. You can then rinse and wash your hair with your usual shampoo.
For those of you who would be worried about turning into a Grinch, don’t panic: despite its green color, these two masks do not color the hair.
In tablets for internal use :
If you don’t have the time (or the desire) to mix spirulina powder with your masks or shampoos, it is possible to take spirulina tablets to make a 30-day cure.
The majority of the testimonies collected demonstrate glaring results after 2/3 months. Be careful to respect the recommended doses (no more than 5g per day) and not to want to be too greedy.
Despite its countless benefits, spirulina remains a food supplement. The association of spirulina with a healthy and balanced diet will therefore bring you better results.
In what cases to use spirulina for hair?
In preventive and curative treatment against hair loss :
Hair loss, a misfortune that spares no one! There are several reasons for hair loss, such as hereditary baldness or a disease such as alopecia. Men and women of all ages, healthy or not, no one is immune. Everyone has known (or will know) the happiness of finding a whole bunch of hair on his brush or in his shower in the morning! All this is very funny, but… How do we fix it?
This is when spirulina arrives! The zinc, iron or even the vitamins of group B contained in this superfood act against hair loss, prevent dryness and accelerate the renewal of our hair.
The same treatment for white hair :
This moment feared by all is however inevitable. But who really wants to wake up one fine morning and discover with horror the appearance of a white hair? No one! And surely not the youngest of us. Indeed, this scourge can affect both a 50-year-old person and a 20-year-old person. Stress, pollution or even a poor diet increase the production of free radicals whose negative effect on our cells leads to capillary fragility, and therefore to the appearance of white hair.
There are two solutions: Go on indefinite leave in Bora Bora or ask spirulina for a little boost.
Spirulina allows a detoxification of the body and makes it possible to delay the appearance of white hair, in particular thanks to the Zinc and Magnesium it contains.
Against dandruff too :
Getting rid of dandruff is not easy. Most of the shampoos or treatments that can be found on the market are unfortunately only temporary solutions. Once the treatment is stopped, the dandruff returns more beautiful.
The antioxidants contained in our charming little blue algae act in depth and allow a visible result in the long term.
Spirulina is therefore THE ideal partner for healthy hair.
