What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a lipid molecule that is produced naturally by the body. It plays an essential role in the functioning of each cell and in digestion. Indeed, it is an important element of the plasma membranes of cells.

It also serves as a component in the structure of bile salts, steroid hormones (estrogens, progesterone, testosterones, cortisol and aldosterone), and vitamin D.

Cholesterol also enters into the structure of an essential molecule, the Hh protein, which helps to guide the development of the embryo.

It circulates in the body by attaching to different types of lipoproteins. The two main types of lipoproteins are high-density lipoproteins (HDL cholesterol) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL cholesterol).

Excess cholesterol can be harmful to your body

An excess of cholesterol in the blood is one of the risk factors for the development of coronary heart disease. It is a disease that affects the arteries that vascularize the heart (coronary arteries) and which results in an insufficient blood supply (ischemia) to the heart muscle.

There are many causes: a diet that is too rich, too sweet, too salty, stress, alcohol, lack of exercise or even tobacco.

LDL cholesterol (mentioned earlier) is often called “bad cholesterol” because it contains a very high amount of cholesterol that can accumulate on the arterial walls in case of excess. HDL cholesterol, on the other hand, removes cholesterol from your arteries by carrying it to the liver where it is eliminated. That is why it is often called “good cholesterol”.

Spirulina used as an anti-cholesterol

Our little blue algae can help you fight cholesterol thanks to its high level of gamma-linolenic acid, which lowers blood cholesterol levels. Spirulina triggers the stimulation of an enzyme, lipoprotein lipase, a key enzyme in the metabolism of triglycerides and lipoproteins. Several studies carried out on animals and men have revealed that spirulina would contribute to the reduction of total cholesterol and LDL. At the same time, an increase in the level of “good” cholesterol has been observed. For example, Tokai University in Japan conducted a study on 30 people with high blood cholesterol levels. By not changing anything in their diet, these people took 4g of spirulina every day for 8 weeks. The result was obvious: a decrease in cholesterol of 4.5%.

Spirulina is therefore a good ally to improve your cholesterol levels, by lowering the “bad”, but above all by increasing the “good”.
