Who run the world? GIRLS ! – Beyoncé
The theme of this article mainly concerns you ladies! Gentlemen stay connected, this article can help you pamper your wife during this hard time! So today we are going to talk about spirulina and pregnancy. We have often had to tell you that it is not recommended to take spirulina when you are pregnant.. Well, no! Spirulina is there to help you ladies and not to destroy you or your child. I may not look very convincing right now, but this article may change your mind. So I’ll let you read it quietly.
Spirulina and breastfeeding? Spirulina during pregnancy?
As you all know, spirulina is a micro-algae with multiple magical powers. With all the nutrients it possesses, it is the case to say it! Iron, vitamins, trace elements … It has all the elements you need for a successful pregnancy. Spirulina is the kind of product that a doctor or a gynecologist could prescribe to you because it is a natural food supplement and not a chemical compound (and therefore no harmful side effects on you or your child).
Why spirulina can be a great help for pregnant women?
It’s hard to stay in shape with a developing baby in our belly and who, on top of that, is drawing on our energy reserves to meet his needs as well. We eat for two, we sleep for two… In short. All of this can quickly become tiring and we must update all this energy spent during the day. Precisely, the elements present in the composition of spirulina participate in the reinforcement of your organism and that of your baby. Let me explain in detail the functions of all these nutrients necessary for your pregnancy.
Let’s start with iron…
Iron is an essential element for the proper functioning of our metabolism. But I’m not teaching you anything. You already know that (the article on iron says a lot about it). In the article on iron, we mentioned the fact that pregnant women have an enormous need for iron to cope with the increase in blood volume, as well as the development of the tissues of the fetus and the placenta (from 25 to 35 mg/day!). So you understand that a lack of iron can be harmful for the pregnant woman! Most of the time (even before pregnancy), we are already deficient in iron because of our menstrual cycle and during pregnancy, this deficiency can increase the risks of miscarriage or premature delivery. You may also experience fatigue and/or low morale. It can also cause problems during childbirth: it increases the risk of hemorrhage and infection!
The baby can also be affected by this lack of iron and this can result in a weakened immune system, exposure to allergies and complications during mental development. Not so good…
But don’t panic! Spirulina has the necessary amount of iron to meet your iron needs. Indeed, 5g of spirulina brings you about 30 mg of iron, that is to say the totality of the daily recommended intake during your pregnancy! Fantastic, right? And it’s a good thing, iron needs are important during the first 6 months of pregnancy.
Vitamin
Vitamins A, B, beta carotene, omega 3 and 6 are important elements in the development of the fetus. The body needs vitamin A in particular, from which it draws its resources. In addition, vitamin A plays an important role in breast milk. If you don’t have enough, you can be prone to infectious diseases, especially during the winter, as well as serious deficiencies.
B vitamins are more important for the child, more precisely for his development. Vitamin B12 and B9 deficiencies can lead to serious complications :
- neurological disorders
- prematurity, growth retardation and malformations
Here again, spirulina comes to the rescue! Rich in proteins and all sorts of vitamins (including those necessary for your body and that of your baby), it will be your ally to help you take care of your little one.
To be noted..
Did you know that an infant needs 30g of calcium and 17g of phosphorus to form a skeleton? Now you know! Spirulina is also endowed with trace elements (including calcium and phosphorus) that will do their job properly. This Caroline is magical.
Is spirulina dangerous for your pregnancy?
I reassure you, spirulina is not dangerous for you and your baby as long as it is of good quality! Remember to check its origin, its geographical origin: this micro-algae is cultivated in tropical regions with high temperatures (in Africa or Asia). Also check on the way it has been dried: the most used industrial processes imply an instantaneous drying at more than 100°, which destroys a large part of the nutrients (those which are sensitive to heat) and which oxidizes the micro-algae. So be careful! Opt for spirulina in powder or flakes for the safety of its artisanal production and the fact that it has not been mixed with strange substances!
A few tips..
– If you want to start a spirulina cure, start it especially from the third month!
– Consuming spirulina when it has never been consumed before can have an impact on the course of the pregnancy, when the body is not used to it. The ideal would be to consume this alga at least a few months before conception and during the first trimester.
– For the dosage, it is advised to increase gradually the daily quantity of spirulina by starting from 2g.
– If you started consuming spirulina before the beginning of your pregnancy, your baby will not be overexposed to toxins.
– Spirulina facilitates milk production and improves the quality of breast milk. Being a natural product, consume spirulina as early as the 6th month to prepare the milk supply if you wish to breastfeed!
Spirulina is therefore the food supplement that will allow you to strengthen your immune system and counteract deficiencies! It will help Baby to grow and Mom to better support the pregnancy and to be in shape. If you have tested Caroline Spirulina during your pregnancy, please share your experience in the comments!
