More than ever, we are turning to the benefits of nature. After many years of ingesting chemicals, we are returning to the natural way of eating to benefit our bodies.
This return to the sources for our health implies the need to better know the food supplements that mother nature offers us.
Klamath, also called Aphanizomenon flos-aquae or AFA, for example, is a seaweed that saw its name appear for the first time in a logbook in the 16th century during the Spanish conquests.
What about this seaweed and its benefits?
Origin of the klamath
This algae takes its name from Upper Klamath Lake located in the state of Oregon in the United States, which has the particularity of being filled with fresh water made up exclusively of water from the surrounding natural waterfalls. According to the studies that have been done, this lake is free of pesticides, heavy metals and other chemicals.
The Native American tribe of the same name used it, however they did not leave us the instructions for use.
Its use in the modern world is therefore more recent since this blue-green, unicellular alga resurfaced in the 1970s, but its marketing as a food supplement began in the 1980s.
Following various surprising testimonies, it will be studied for these benefits at the beginning of the century.
Klamath is a non-toxic cyanobacteria, which is harvested in summer. Its production is 50,000 tons per year.
Klamath, properties
This algae, which is harvested mainly on the surface, has a large number of advantages :
- 20 amino acids including 10 essential, which allows a perfect assimilation by the body.
- It is rich in minerals and trace elements including: calcium, copper, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, zinc … (there are about sixty)
- 14 vitamins including A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, B8, K, it is particularly rich in B12
- 15 carotenoids, including beta-carotene which is a powerful antioxidant
- chlorophyll, which stimulates the elimination of toxins
- unsaturated fatty acids: omega 3 and 6
- polyphenols, antioxidants very present in plants
- pigments, which give it its color
- beta-phenylethylamine: known to have a major role in the treatment of depression thanks to its neurotransmitter power.
Klamath, virtues and benefits
Due to its composition, Klamath has multiple virtues.
The first virtue of this seaweed is that it is a powerful natural antidepressant.
Indeed, its regular users feel from the beginning an effect on their mood and say they have more energy.
There is nothing surprising in this given its composition: indeed thanks to several of its components including beta-phenylethylamine, klamath is a neurotransmitter and therefore promotes intellectual functioning.
Moreover, since the end of the 90s, several studies have been conducted in various universities by different researchers to demonstrate these properties (I know I shine with clarity).
To be more precise :
- In 1995, research was conducted at the University of Illinois in the United States.
- Since 2000 various studies have been conducted at the University of Urbino, Italy.
It emerges that the Klamath, within the framework of a regular consumption can intervene to regulate a problem of anaemia, to fight against the stress as well as for :
“Regulate the metabolism, stimulate digestion, maintain and nourish the joints, improve the quality of the skin, nails and hair, protect the cardiovascular system, strengthen the immune system, prevent the replication of viruses, fight against free radicals, increase resistance to radiant phenomena, fight inflammation, stimulate cell regeneration, support and accelerate the processes of self-healing, improve intellectual performance, mental activity, concentration and memory, reduce physical and emotional stress, increase and improve long-term energy. ” (Result published by the universities and put online on Google)
But this surprising algae has other assets up its sleeve, which is why research on it continues.
Spirulina or Klamath?
Both are from the blue green algae family.
Klamath exists only in the wild, so it is rarer and although it is a superfood with multiple recognized virtues, the price difference that we often see between klamath and spirulina is not worth the candle.
As far as spirulina is concerned, it is cultivated, which ensures a total traceability and a constant control. In addition, spirulina is richer in iron, so it is more recommended for athletes or people suffering from nutritional deficiencies.
Klamath, Expert opinion
In the three decades since its commercialization, the Klamath has still not revealed all its secrets. However, the mysterious algae has been able to demonstrate its value.
Dr. Gabriel Cousens stated:
“The greatest value of klamath comes not just from its nutrient concentration or even its neuropeptide precursors, but from its incredible positive effect on the nervous system.
People who take Klamath have systematically reported: a general increase in alertness and mental resistance in the short and long term, better memory, improved creativity, a better sense of concentration and resourcing. »
Klamath is prescribed by many specialists for its incredible effects.
So, superfood?
The Klamath did not take long to impose itself on us although its commercialization was late.
It has been able to make a place of choice in our daily lives, its natural origin and its surprising effects especially on the mind make it a great ally in a world where stress has taken over.
There are several ways to consume it, in capsule, in powder, it is up to you to make your choice.
