We find ourselves with a small article to explain how to consume our dear “Spirulina”! As you already know, spirulina is a superfood with extraordinary virtues. It allows us to have a better health, to fight against certain diseases and famine in the world. Indeed, this small algae is rich in essential macronutrients! However, we must be careful with the way we consume it. Consuming too much of it can cause problems.

Let me explain in this article how to go about consuming it in moderation.

 

How to consume spirulina?

The recommended consumption of spirulina is between 2 and 4g per day, in the morning or during the day. Take the powder mixed with water or fruit juice rich in vitamin C. However, do not consume your spirulina with tea or coffee, it would only decrease the absorption of iron.

When you consume spirulina for the first time, it is advisable to start with small doses to give your body time to get used to it and increase them as you go along. Start with 1g per day and increase little by little until you reach 4g. Indeed, a too high dose at the beginning could lead to a slight stomach ache due to the detoxifying effects, or a laxative effect (and I don’t think you would like to undergo all that).

Spirulina can also be mixed with your salads, yoghurts, or pasta for example but be careful: it is preferable not to cook it to keep its nutritional properties!

For the tablets, which are dosed at 500mg, it is recommended to consume 6 tablets per day, which corresponds to 3g. Simply start with 2 tablets per day and then increase the doses gradually.

Spirulina is generally taken in several doses at mealtime, more precisely 20 to 30 minutes before each meal, to be sure of its effectiveness. For some people, taking it in the evening is too stimulating. In this case, it is better to avoid consuming it at the end of the afternoon (in this case after 4 pm).

Many people do not like spirulina because of its taste. It is easier to take it in tablets if the taste is unpleasant. On the other hand, in powder, it is easier to incorporate into the diet (in your salads, pasta, juices, smoothies etc..).

The dosage of spirulina for bodybuilding

In the case of sportsmen, it is possible to increase the doses up to 10g during intensive trainings and competitions (Attention: one can consume such doses but during short durations). For sportsmen also, the rule of progressive dosage applies (1g per day then increase progressively). In normal circumstances, it is recommended to consume 3 to 5g of spirulina, preferably in the morning at breakfast and lunch. If you consume it in powder form, you can mix it with your protein shaker, orange juice or cottage cheese.
Note that a little spirulina in your post-training shaker (just after training) improves its effectiveness and assimilation.
